These two directions—against the complacency of the present and against any nostalgia for the past—are admittedly broad outlines, which is to say that they are open. There are multiple directions, for not only politics but for other areas of research, sketched out here. Thus, I have attempted to reread Marx, to return to the prehistory of our present, not to rescue the past (in this case the Marxist tradition) unscathed, as if nothing had changed, but to undermine the limitations, complacency, and pessimism of the present, to produce a present that is different from itself, which is the precondition for a radically different future.
